From August 4 to 7, the Chinese military will conduct live fire drills in six maritime areas around the self-governed island and their respective airspace, according to the state-run Xinhua News Agency and state-affiliated Global Times, among other state-owned stores.

The news of the exercises came not long after Pelosi arrived in Taipei around 10:45 PM local time on Tuesday. She is the top US legislator to visit the self-ruled Democratic island in 25 years.

Her visit came amid a wave of warnings from Beijing that a… possible military response when Pelosi visited Taiwan, which China has long considered its own.

White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told reporters Monday that China could take several steps in response to Pelosi’s visit, including firing missiles and holding military exercises.

After announcing that China will hold exercises around Taiwan, Chinese state media further reported that the PLA’s Eastern Theater Command would begin exercises on Tuesday evening, which would include maritime and air combat exercises, as well as firing long-range artillery and conventional missiles.

In his comments on Monday, Kirby stressed that Beijing has no reason to use Pelosi’s visit as a “pretext” for military activity around Taiwan, citing the time when China conducted live-fire military exercises near the island. last weekend.

In a pronunciation shared by Xinhua On Tuesday, China’s foreign ministry said Pelosi’s visit is a “serious violation” of the One China policy and will have a “serious impact” on US-China relations.

Pelosi continued writing Twitter after landing that “our delegation’s visit to Taiwan is a tribute to America’s unwavering commitment to support Taiwan’s vibrant democracy.”

And in an op-ed published in The Washington Post around the same time, she wrote“In light of the increasing aggression of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), our congressional delegation’s visit should be seen as an unequivocal statement that America stands behind Taiwan, our democratic partner, as it defends itself and its freedom.”
