  • Representative Billy Long claimed Trump backed him in the Missouri Senate race after all.

  • Trump announced his support for “ERIC”, a reference to the names of the two leading candidates.

  • But Trump’s loyal ally was still trying to cling to Trump’s support.

Former President Donald Trump decided Monday to show Missouri Republicans his political power by offering a vague endorsement for “ERIC.” On Tuesday, one of his allies, who isn’t Eric, responded by jokingly claiming that the semantics of Trump’s approval meant it was actually for him.

“I came up with the phrase ‘Trump Train’. I’ve been with him through thick and thin, but I was surprised when he came out with a wholehearted endorsement of me in the #MOSen race!” Rep. Billy Long wrote on Twitter. “He said to choose BETWEEN the two ERICs – that’s me! ES line 2 EG line 4 I’m BETWEEN the two on line 3!”

Missouri polling stations close at 7 p.m. local time tonight. The Senate primaries will be one of Tuesday’s most watched games.

In an earlier statement, Long acknowledged that Trump did not pick him.

Trump’s reference to ERIC is a nod to embattled former Missouri governor Eric Greitens, who resigned during a sexual misconduct scandal, and Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt.

“I trust that the Great People of Missouri will make their own decisions about this, just as they did when they gave me landslide victories in the 2016 and 2020 elections, and I am therefore proud to announce that ERIC has my full and Total approval !” Trump wrote in a statement published by his Save America PAC.

Both Erics have claimed Trump’s support, adding to the idiosyncrasy of the situation. Greitens has been the target of millions of negative ads as more established Republicans worry about his old scandals and new allegations that he abused his now ex-wife, the party will lose a chance to hold the seat in November. sen. Roy Blunt, the No. 4 Republican in the Senate, is retiring. Greitens has repeatedly denied the allegations of abuse.

To add to the confusion, technically there are three Erics on the ballot, as Navy veteran and comedian Eric McElroy is also on the ballot. Representative Vicky Hartzler, who previously received the support of Senator Josh Hawley, poked fun at this.

“Congratulations to Eric McElroy,” Hartzler said in a statement. according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. “He’s having a great night.”

As for Long, he was an early supporter of Trump’s 2016 campaign. The congressman has also built a reputation for his auctioneer roots, such as when he… drowned a protester in 2018.
